Biography

My research interests are related to biodiversity listing, applied genomics, and molecular surveys at micro and macro levels. Special attention is given to wild, endemic, and endangered non-model organisms and their relation to the surrounding environment. The research focuses on elucidating and developing molecular markers at genomic and transcriptomic levels and their application in studies of molecular systematics, population genetics, genetic conservation, adaptation to climatic changes, isolation by adaptation, and distance identification of species and hybrids. Applied methodology ranges from nucleic acids extraction, single-locus genotyping, fingerprinting, and the characterization of entire genomes or transcriptomes using NGS technology and related bioinformatics analysis and computational biology tools. The acquired experience was developed through postgraduate scholarships, a postdoctoral contract, conference attendance grants, scientific society memberships, and partnerships that formed a solid scientific network for knowledge exchange and project collaborations between Ain Shams University (Egypt), Murcia University (Spain), Huazhong Agricultural University (China), and Messina University (Italy), in addition to Institute of Industrial Biotechnology and Innovation (Dominican Republic), and Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV (Germany). This network was established through three international scientific visits, two short-term (10 months) & one long-term fellowship (48 months), and participation in seven international and eleven national collaborative research projects, four of which I was the PI. My position at Ain Shams University allowed me to establish my own line of investigation and research team named “Applied genomics and biodiversity”. Within the team’s scientific framework, we contributed to the scientific community by several published achievements oriented to identifying endemic, endangered, and wild species, listing species in digital records, taxonomical revisions, and distinguishing genotypes; as well as evaluating genetic variability and acquiring genetic information about crops with known productive traits. The achievements also targeted the impact of environmental factors and climate change on the distribution & spread of macro- and microorganisms from locations with extremophilic conditions. Moreover, to explore non-model organisms to provide genetic sources for green or white biotechnological applications. I was able to design and publish new bioinformatic approaches in plant genomics and the development of molecular-markers-based protocols (e.g., marker-assistant breeding programs) in horticulture crops and a patent registered in China for the identification of cultivated pepper. Moreover, the team was contracted to design and validate commercial kits for private companies in Egypt. The results were disseminated through three completed and five in-progress Ph.D. theses, six completed, and four in-progress Master theses. The three Ph.D. graduates received professorship positions in Egyptian public universities (Ain Shams University, Arish University, and Benha University); some of the master's students were able to receive competitive grants to continue their studies in higher-ranked universities (e.g., Université de Sherbrooke (Canada), Huazhong Agricultural University (China), Case Western Reserve University (U.S.A)). To date, a total of 23 articles have been published in peer-reviewed indexed journals (Scimago and JCR: 10 Q1, 5 Q2, 4 Q3, and 4 Q4), in addition to 13 articles published in peer-reviewed non-indexed journals. According to the Scopus database, the current H-index is 6, but the Google scholar profile recorded 8, while the RG score is 24.84 points.
